Meat Sales 10/6/2010

October 6, 2010

About once a month there will be at least one grocery store run a GOOD sale on meat items. This week there’s a couple going on and so it’s time to restock our freezer. Just wanted to let you guys know so you can stock up too. We will definitely overblow our budget this week because I wasn’t expecting meat to be on sale until next week. But that’s just less money we will spend next week.

If you have a Foodland in your area this is one of the best places to buy meat. They run pretty good sales and the meat is good quality. Sometimes different Foodlands vary by a few cents on their sales, but 99% of the time they are within five cents of each other.

Here’s what is on sale at Foodland this week:

Ground Chuck $1.68/lb (must buy 3 lbs or more)

Sirloin Pork Chops $1.19/lb

Fryer Leg Quarters .55/lb

Whole Boston Butt $1.28/lb

Whole Pork Loin $2.19/lb (this is NOT rock bottom price but is a decent deal)

Whole Ribeyes $5.58/lb

Whole Sirloin Tips $2.29/lb

Baby Back Pork Ribs $3.19/lb

Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts $1.98/lb

Honestly all we are buying from Foodland is the ground chuck, chicken leg quarters, sirloin pork chops and maybe some ribeyes. The sale is good on the Boston Butt also but we still have one in the freezer from Kroger’s sale on them. I will probably purchase about 10 lbs of the ground chuck and 10 lbs of the chicken. I’m not sure about the pork chops….it will depend on how much room I can make in the freezer. The ribeyes we will just buy enough for one meal because I don’t want to blow our budget too badly!  When I purchase meat, I most always buy in 10 lb increments.  We almost always keep 20 to 30 lbs of meat in our freezer. If you do this, just remember to label and date it so that you can pull the old out first to use.

Food Lion also has some really good meat deals this week. Last week was the first week I have EVER shopped at Food Lion because typically they are too expensive. Hopefully they have realized that they need to run good sales to get business….cause the last two weeks sales have been fairly decent.

Country Style Pork Ribs $1.39/lb

Boston Butt Pork Roast $1.29/lb

Holly Farms Chicken Thighs .67/lb

Tuna Steaks $6.99/lb

The other meat “sales” they have this week are not good at all. For example, they have Ground beef for $3.49/lb. Why would I pay that much when I can get ground chuck for $1.68/lb at Foodland?  You have to really sit down with your sale papers and “study” them to figure out what’s good and what’s not. It also has helped me to make a trip into a couple different stores just to do price comparisons.

Kroger also has a couple good meat sales this week.

Boneless Pork Loin $1.77/lb

Whole Sirloin Tip $1.97/lb

Whole Boneless Ribeye $5.77/lb

Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts $1.97/lb

Tuna Steaks $6.99/lb

As you can see alot of times the stores will have the same thing on sale. The trick is to decide whether it’s worth your time and effort to drive an extra five miles to get something cheaper. Rarely do I drive out of my way to get a sale (although this week we will to go to Foodland).  If the savings is significant enough then it’s worth it. But make sure you aren’t running to five different stores only to realize that you only saved $10.
